Jim, Best topps baseball set of the year so far. And Im certainly not going to pay four times the amount on eBay, or buy a case of cards from a distributor. Why one per pack? They are baseball cards, not works of art. these cards with borders are nice, they look like something from donruss, still better than cards since 2016. i bought it but no way i open it. Worst design in the history of topps baseball cards. Part of a 70-card continuation line, the Topps Platinum Players Die-Cuts insert aims to identify the 70 greatest players on Topps cards. The 70 years logo is embossed in silver on most of the cards. As many of you have stated, this is no longer a hobby for kids. Will not collect this set. Maybe compared to high end releases, but it is not cheap for a base product. Bringing chromium to the equation, the 2021 Topps Series 1 Silver Packs Promo promises one pack per Hobby box and two per Hobby jumbo box. STCL-JSO Juan Soto - Washington Nationals. But it is quickly becoming a hobby beyond the reach of your average adult. I think I am finally done with the hobby. Naturally, we are curious about the back, as well, but that image was not provided. I can tell it is Ronald Acuna Jr. but I cannot make out the handwriting on the reverse of the card. Its sad.
Thats more than jumbo prices of recent years. Here is what I have learned. Moving to the inserts, most of the choices are new, as well. Collecting old cards only now, forget this new garbage!! Yo! 17 cards. Hate it! I like the 70 year icon design in the upper right corner. Yes 40 people for series one retail where you might get a $1.00 jersey card. If. My local card store is asking $225 for one jumbo hobby box. Of course, there are hits to be found in 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball, including debuting 70 Years of Baseball Autographs and 70 Years of Baseball Dual Autographs (#/5). This is ridiculous.
What is the reason fro these, just to show you a autograph card that you didnt get?
Hey Trey, I pulled a Sketch Card from a series 1 Hobby Box. Dont make a mistake like the 98 thru 00 when the designs all look alike. The design is too plain. By the way, the cards look terrible. But they didnt to save $$. If I could give it fewer stars I would! The 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball checklist also works in the standard selection of parallels, plus the all-new Platinum Anniversary (#/70) edition. This design is gaudy. PARALLEL CARDS: Black #/199, Gold #/50, Red #/25 or less, Platinum 1/1. The craziest, ugliest thing Ive ever seen on a Topps card, or at least since the burlap borders of 1968, which was a truly WTF moment before I knew that phrase existed. I wonder if running the nameplate horizontally along the bottom would help? The high prices we see is mostly not from Topps, but they are stuck in that if they increase print runs, they run the risk of killing demand for their product in the long run. Lots of room to improve these cards. Over-production, meaningless base inserts. Cronenworth for series 2?
The local card shop is fleecing us. Any input would be helpful, thanks. Stop buying from them. Collectors will also likely notice the 70-year logo in silver in place of the standard Topps logo. Potentially, perfect cards may be extremely rare in this set.
I also agree that white borders should be back as it is a lot easier to trade and sell raw cards without that excessive scrutiny. With each passing year I wonder how long I can continue to afford this hobby.. If I choose to buy. Jumbo only.
These include Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) parallels. 1996 and 2000. James Earl, you make some good points.
Hate the design, and disappointed in Topps continuing Paul Molitor hatred. The only clear difference is the stamped print run. Price point for such a highly produced product is also unspeakably bad. My bigger concern is the embossing. BRING BACK THE LEADER MULTI-PLAYER CARDS!! Cheesy product overall! As usual almost half of the Oakland As players listed have already moved on to other teams via free agencyTopps should not list players on a team that they know have filed for free agency and instead showcase the players in the first series that are still on the team and who are often ignored in the second and update series. Card stock is beyond thin. At first glance, the diagonal nameplate does make it a little tough to pick out the name. 100 cards. One thing thats odd is that the economy has shifted to listening to the customers voice due to the internet and social media, but for some reason the opposite holds true for sports trading cards. Its a shame this hobby is only now for the rich elite and corrupt. It would be crazy to stake so much without one (given its series 2, update, chrome, holiday cards, and other ludicrous sets they make). Genuinely curious who decides which design gets selected each year. And then buy the others I want ad-hoc. I feel the same. When put in the standard 9 pocket sheet, the lines on either side of the card will link with the card next to it. As for the design of this set , horrible at best . I can see it coming and I feel sorry for the people paying crazy money for autos now and in the recent past . Because of this, they need to keep the design elements in the exact same spots, which really kills the horizontal cards. Oh one other thing. What is up with 1 card per pack a 1952 card? I agree that Topps has completely lost touch with the collectors that comprise the backbone of the hobby. I went on Topps website but that wasnt much help. Overall, Topps produced 13,000,000 more parallel and insert cards in 2021 than in 2020. Im drawing a blank. With ~500 employees and ~$200M in annual revenue youd expect betternot just from a card design, working with instead of against their customers. Names way too small. Heres the findings.
The samples look good except for the stuff on the left side of the card..too busy. Give us a good bang for our buck, thats all we ask for. You guys forgot about the Purple parallels from Meijer and the 1986 Topps Baseball 35th Anniversary Set has a Green parallel at Target.
PARALLEL CARDS: Blue, Green (Target Cello), Black #/299, Platinum Anniversary #/70, Red #/10, Gold 1/1. Now they are just computer generated graphics on pieces of slick cardboard, which look all too similar from one year to the next. Not a fan of the diagonal designs. Goodness gracious. Sorry,Topps Miss the Mark on this one, have better design that Todays Kids NOT going to gravitate to these Baseball cards!!! Saw cards from 1990s lost and confused design, wrote to Late Sy Berger, that autographs Too expensive and Under taking tracking the players,in turn years later tackle the Autographs!! In my opinion they make the cards look very busy and cheep. https://www.cardboardconnection.com/evolution-topps-baseball-cards-1951-2017 ", 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball Base Parallel Breakdown. Oh wait, higher productions to meet the higher demands. You think Topps will have a way to fix this? Because it is a milestone year, they should have tried to combine a classic design with a modern feel. Similar to last year's flagship set, there is an anniversary to celebrate.
(Topps, you deserved that after 2020 Update) Im still trying to figure out if I was upside down or was it the cardsor maybe a little bit of both! However, the low-numbered series does not apply to the entire base set. I am giving 1 star for the overall card.. but would give multi negative stars for the design .. bringing the overall average to just 1 star. As a graphic designer myself I couldnt be more disappointed in the 2021 Topps design. The one positive is the border is white according to the picture. Its really sad how bad Topps has gotten. Topps sold hobby boxes online for 79.99 which is the suggested retail. Im in my 50s and when I was 8 , I would have liked it. I have two concerns about this set. 70YA-AB Alec Bohm - Philadelphia Phillies, 70YA-LG Luis Gonzalez - Arizona Diamondbacks, 70DA-AG Roberto Alomar - Toronto Blue Jays. Zero creativity, just a bunch of lines, dots, diagonal crap. I was totally amazed by the sheer amount of insert cards that are in this set .10 auto subsets , 6 auto relics , 10 auto/relic/buybacks , box toppers , box topper autos , clear cards and another 10 labeled as inserts . players name is definitely too tight in the space.. it has to be more prominent on the card. Cant read the players name. Fare thee well. Maybe Im missing something. I noticed there is a notation of the sketch cards here but no checklist. Knowing that one line is the signature of the artist, but I cant make out the second line. First, the design work on the front of the base cards is horrible. The font for the names? 1 per Value Box/Blaster. 2 Stars based on price and the zig zag lines but it will not make any difference. Well this sucks! Wakeup topps yur ripping off yur buyers! In every situation, Topps has run their company with a serious lack of respect for their end consumers. Better than 2020. Anyway, I dont think theyre so terrible. Keep up the good work Trey . Much better than the awkward 2020 cards. And, finally, collectors can dive into the new season of Home Run Challenge with one card per Hobby/Jumbo box. Does anyone know if its possible to by boxes directly from Topps, to avoid the ridiculous markup of my local store or the on-line hawkers? Ive been priced out of collecting now. Basically the point was the design is opinion, but the font size of the name is an error by every Topps employee who had input on the card. Good for them! You can email any images to firstname.lastname@example.org, The cardboard connections idea of making a list of just the RC cards in the base set is a good idea and I hope that you will continue this for all upcoming baseball card sets and following years would be great . Ill give it a chance though. And besides, it is very difficult printing the backs of these cards with 30 one way, then 30 another way, andwell, you get the picture! Factory sets 660? Single-player parallels include Black (#/199), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25 or less) and Platinum (1/1). No matter how you look at it or what you want to call it , if it is added to the base cards or their colored parellel Ser.#d card , its an insert . I am not a fan of this design at all. Ugliest set since the inaugural, very disappointing. Does Topps seek any collector feedback when selecting designs? I cant really rate the cards because I cant find them. This design didnt look that great at first when seeing it online, although bringing the borders back was nice. They cant help it that your distributor/LCS/flipper decide to sell it at $130 or more. REGARDING THE LINES IN THE FRONT (sorry for yelling, but heres what I noticed about them): Mail (will not be published) (required). Not a great design, but the photos are pretty good. Flippers will ruin the hobby for along time to come if you dont stop them. Numbers are rounded; comparison is 2021 to 2020 Series 1: There are 5000 more parallel rainbow foil cards per player than last year (600 per player vs 5,600 per player). Topps uses borders because it says money because the can butt the cards next to each other (saving paper). Ive only opened a 67 card hanger so far (12 rookies out of it, not bad for $10). it is getting out of hand w pricing. might be time to stop collecting though. Quite a few dont like this new era design. Looks young. Like always, the memorabilia selection includes commemorative relics exclusive to Hobby and Jumbo boxes. In 70 yrs only 3 years stand out. I like that borders are back.
Dont let us down AGAIN, topps. Used to be fun but no as much fun these days. On topps.com the hobby box is offered for $79.99 of course its sold out. I gave in and bought two jumbo boxes because I am a fool!
My local card shop is selling the exact same hobby box for $125. The name is the size of the fly on Pences head during the VP debate. Adding to the flagship selection is 2021 Topps Series 2 Baseball. +5 The BASE set is awesome. Two are not font issues, but style/background problems.
CHEAP??? only buying for the rookies. As with anything that is collectable , condition and scarcity will always be the deciding factor of appreciation and value in the future . I went to the Topps Evolution page These signed cards add Red (#/5) and Platinum (1/1) parallels. On the checklist it states red autos are #d to 25 but I pulled a red Strasburg #d to 10. UNBELIVABLE!!!!!
I like the return of white borders since 2014 but the geo shapes is distracting and the name fonts are barely legible. SIMPLE BOO Topps! Taking inspiration from the 1990 Topps Double Header cards, Topps Double Headers pairs the rookie card and final Topps card for 25 key names. The design looks like Panini meets 91 Donruss. 1 Star is generous. I seem to recall this same box cost $80 in 2019, and $140 last year. I give it 4 stars for the few rookies that have been revealed so far. Like all the different parallel and insert sets. 4 stars . 10 Daulton Varsho - Arizona Diamondbacks RC, 177 Ryan Castellani - Colorado Rockies RC. While there have been partial borders in recent series, the last full border came in 2015. Jacking up the prices but offering the same 1 auto or relic which all but guarantees your hit will be a worthless manufactured relic. It boggles my freakin mind. Just dont like the pictures on the cards. Does anyone know where you can go to identify print runs of COMMON cards? The History of Topps turns the focus to Topps itself via 10 cards that look back at key moments and subjects from Topps' past. Do a one every other pack and put an insert in between. Topps has now bowed to the breakers and flippers. They may well ruin the hobby of set building. 166 Elbows Only - Los Angeles Angels Combo. Good Fun cheap rip nameplate a little small though. For the base set, there are 330,000 more cards per player in 2021 than in 2020. There is a fine line between edgy and gaudy. Better than the 2020 set, but not as colorful as the 2015 set. 1) Is it safe to assume the complete set will be 660 cards? Im not in this as an investment, but something I to relax and enjoy. Look a bit off !!! They are noted here to make it easier to review the base rookies. I see absolutely nothing different in the design of the 1/1. I also like the white background. The new flagship collecting season begins with 330 base cards, including top veterans and rookies, as well as Future Stars, League Leaders, Team Cards and World Series Highlights subsets. I prefer the portrait style of card, dont like the mix of landscape and portrait. Here is another example of how Topps runs amok. Hmmm ya know, I wonder if having a monopoly on league and team usage has anything to do with it. I just want to buy a hobby box at a reasonable price. Has a set of insert cards ever been put in every pack? These look just like Donruss cards-cheap, horrible design. Dear Topps, its a baseball card not a Circus Advertisement, clean it up. HRC-16 Christian Yelich - Milwaukee Brewers, SIS-14 Roberto Clemente - Pittsburgh Pirates, HOT-1 Topps is Founded by the Shorin Family, TTY-16 Ken Griffey Jr. - Seattle Mariners, PDC-14 Ken Griffey Jr. - Seattle Mariners, 51BT-14 Christian Yelich - Milwaukee Brewers. Got a complete set but guess what NO AUTOS in either box! With one card each from all 70 years, the one-of-one History of Topps Baseball Buyback cards come encased. Hobby only. Its literally made for the product. This means there are 330,000 more Dylan Carlson rookie cards than Gavin Lux rookie cards. There's also the on-card 1986 Topps Baseball Autograph line, with Black (#/199), Gold (#/50 or less), Red (#/25 or less - Hobby) and Platinum (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo) versions. Look for Blue, Black (#/299), Platinum Anniversary (#/70), Red (#/10), Gold (1/1), and Autograph (#/10 or less) editions. Nice design, especially the silver anniversary stamp. I also feel like the team name should always be shown, whether or not the team logo is also included. document.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value", ( new Date() ).getTime() ); SUBSET KEY: CUP=Rookie Cup, FS=Future Stars, LL=League Leaders, WSH=World Series Highlights. Even golds are tough pulls, which means the presses were cranked up. Not bad, not great, 2021 Bowman looks A TON better than 2021 Topps IMO. $250 for a hobby jumbo box? Kind of a cool visual. Major thumbs down for me. Im not sure why Im even confused with the bad design, font size error (thats not an opinion peoplethats a fact), prices, no worry about breakers or flippers, etc. A favorite for many, 2021 Topps Series 1 Baseball brings collectors another update of the long-running product. With each passing year I wonder how long I can continue to afford this hobby., But it is quickly becoming a hobby beyond the reach of your average adult. Horrible and about time to leave this hobby. Also interested to see how long brick and mortar stores will be sold out within minutes of being stocked. retail is rigged, out the back door it goes. Take care. Collectors can revisit the 2020 season in the Postseason Performance Autograph (#/50 or less) and World Series Champions Autograph (#/50 or less) sets. Tons of cards, parallels, subsets. Nice product but the relics are player worn not game used which is odd and hard to find retail. T2004 is the only year that may pose a font size issue similar to 2021. I prefer the borderless, but these would look better even they at the very least had the player coming out of the photo, breaking into the border.
I like the 70th anniversary stamp. I am out!!! They have already ran many of the kids out due to the flippers and their GREED. Especially with these Group Breaks. They are in a no win situation on that front, although they are printing money right now by the boatloads. The 2011 card was a good example of this.
Am I the only person who thinks these look a bit Bowman-esque? Serial numbered #/10. GUARANTEED, have kids enjoying collecting Topps Baseball cards AGAIN!! Serial numbered #/10. In addition, the Hobby-only Clear parallels have 10 copies per card. Its a waste of a good insert. Havent had a product this loaded with key rookies since 2018 Update. This time, Topps is honoring 70 years of baseball cards with a party for 50 fans. Just put Bernie Sanders in the background of every card.
